A tropical vegetable with huge 1 foot to 3 foot long, broad oval shaped pointed leaves. The lobes are basal and obtuse. The plant is unisexual, male plants having 4 to 6 stamens. Ovary fruits in bunches of 2 to 4 burst open at maturity. The plant is grown as an ornamental and the leaves are eaten like a spinach.(Plants of Mexico, by Charles B.
