Coyolxauhqui and Huitzilopochtli

Back

Coyolxauhqui and Huitzilopochtli- The mythic brother Huitzilopochtli (Wheet-zee-loe-Poach-tlee) and his sister Coyolxauhqui (Ko-yol-Shau-kee) who battled each other. The myth varies but one account is of the brother and sister battling for power over the movement of a civilization from Coatepec to Tenochtitlan. Huitzilopochtli disagreed with his sister and the villages desire to stay in Coatepec so much that he decapitated and dismembered her, eating her heart. A circular stone of Coyolxauhqui's dismembered body was unearthed at the Post-classic city of Tenochtitlan. In this painting Coyolxauhqui's limbs are fully attached as she stands strong against her brother Huitzilopochtli in a low rider.
