Dominican author Julia Alvarez fell in love with this painting. I had mentioned to her that a very faint outline of my abuelita stands in the door way, her soul peering out of the house. Julia said she had seen other spirits in the painting. The house is actually based on a building I sketched in Michigan City Indiana from my mothers three story apartment window. It was Thanksgiving and everyone had crowded into her one bedroom unit. The congestion was driving me a little stir crazy. I escaped by peering out the window from time to time. This house, huge as it was, sat idle and empty the whole weekend. It had been converted into an office.
